Thoreau MacDonald fonds [Graphic material and other material]

Fonds consists of 29 book plates, 100 black and white photographs (including images of Yonge St, Arnold Ave, Elizabeth St, Centre St, Bathurst St, Hwy 7 and Seager farm and other agricultural scenes in Thornhill) 41 sketches done in pencil, and several write-ups on Thoreau Macdonald.

Collection consists of three items: memoir of William Vaughan, originally published in 1839, with only the title page copied for reference purposes; the collector's compilation of his family tree purporting to trace descendancy to Benjamin Vaughan (one of the signatories of the Paris Peace Treaty of 1784 and City of Vaughan namesake); and an unpublished history of the so-called "Baker Homestead", located on lot 11, concession 2, Vaughan.

Fonds consists of photonegatives and contact sheets. Fonds focuses on members of Baker family : Amos, Isaac, Alvin, Mary, Ruth, and Paul; also provides insight into life in Vaughan during period in question in terms of architecture, occupations, transportation system (particularly impact of winter on municipal roads), etc.

Fonds consists of minute books delineating deliberations, decisions, and activities, for the period 1920-1991; members and officers also cited, intermittently. Fonds also constituted of the Maple Tweedsmuir history, in 2 volumes, compiled between ca. 1948 and 1995 (while the institute disbanded in 1991, work on the compilation of the final volume of the Tweedsmuir history continued until 1995) the history, which includes numerous 19th and early twentieth century photographs and postcards, comments on: architecture and buildings such as the Maple Community Library, Canadian Bank of Commerce, Maple Community Centre; general history of Maple; personalities such as Dr. Routley and Isaac Baker; events such as the Superior Propane Explosion of 1962; institutions and agencies such as Woodbridge and Vaughan Telephone Co., Maple Flying Club; etc. A historical sketch of the hamlet of Sherwood, just south of Maple, is also included. Tweedsmuir history provides excellent photographic evidence of Maple and its inhabitants, and includes postcards, some examples of which are hand-coloured. The history chronicles Maple and its evolution to 1995, with the second volume focusing heavily on streetscapes and heritage preservation in the mid-1980's to 1990's. Fonds also includes two large volumes of newspaper clippings chronicling various events in Maple from 1960 to the early 1980's and the history of the Maple Women's Institute; volume focusing upon Maple includes extensive coverage of Maple Lions Club and Superior Propane Explosion of 1962, development and local opposition thereto, municipal government, as well as images and text from newspapers re: 19th-century Maple. Second volume centres primarily upon the history of the Maple W.I. Fonds also includes loose postcards and photographs documenting architecture, streetscapes, and personalities; as well, odd documents such as maps, printed histories of the Hope United Church and Teston United Church, 1891 by-laws for the Maple United Church, etc. Of final note is the presence of a Primitive Methodist "preachers' plan" for the Laskay Circuit for 1867-1879, indicating preachers, stewards and places on the circuit (includes villages of Carrville and Patterson in Vaughan Township).

Isaac Baker fonds

Fonds consists of personal journals chronicling experiences of the author and his family, and business records of the harness shop, which take the form of two daybooks, journals for recording daily financial transaction, and a manual delineating all of the specifications of equestrian accoutrements made by Baker; fonds also includes two journals chronicling the household expenses and disbursements of Baker family ; fonds as a whole particularly useful in documenting life and business during the Great Depression in Vaughan Township.

Collection consists of: 3 oil on canvas paintings by Andrew Phin;
2 watercolours by Carolyn Blish; 4 prints (3 Inuit and 1 Farm); 1 Inuit sketch ( “Camp” by Germaine Arnaktauyok); 7 photographs including the moving of the Troyer Barn to Country Heritage Park in 1978, Dr. Armitage, Tony Gagliano, and one of the Archaeological Survey in the Boyd Conservation Area; and 1 wooden plaque with a Canadian Loyalists stamp. Also included was portrait of an unknown family, photos of Jas. Andrews farm in Maple and a print of N. Clarke Wallace. Also included are business directories, annual reports, city guides, economic/business newsletters published by the City from 1990-1998 as well as framed certificates and awards. RG 21-014.1 consists of books gifted to the City by delegations and partnerships from around the wold, such as Italy and China. Several historical books re Thoreau MacDonald, Humber River, Yonge St, Ontario history, round out the collection. Of particular interest is a board game, Vaughanopoly. Also 18 awards given to Economic Development Dept for marketing and informaiton technology, etc plus awards given to City (fire station 7-10, soccer, etc).
Accession RG 21-015.1 consists of 20 items including certificates and photos that were received by the City of Vaughan from 1990-2010. These items include Friendship Agreements, International Partnership Agreements and Twinning Agreements. All items were removed from their frames and placed in archival boxes as several of the frames had been damaged and the glass cracked.

In 2022, a portrait of Lord Beaverbrook from this collection was discovered at the JOC and brought back to the City Archives.

Accession M024.14 consists of certificates and plaques deliniating the City's involvement with local groups and organizations, and a city Twinning with the Italian city of Sora.
