Custodial history

Anthony Bowes (1789-1870), his wife, Ellen, and their children came to Vaughan Township in 1831. They settled on Lot 3, Concession 2. The land was farmed by the Bowes family until 1950. Anthony Bowes also bought Lot 7, Concession 2 in 1840 and farmed it with his children. Other Bowes family members farmed Lots 10 and 11 on Concession 3. Anthony later married Martha Maxwell, the mother of his son

Scope and content

Fonds consists of a speech given by Ms. Rumble on the occasion of the unveiling of a plaque, located on the site of the original Bowes homestead, commemorating the contribution of the Bowes to the area. The Bowes line is traced back to 16th century England, but the speech principally concentrates on the descendants of Anthony Bowes (1789-1870), who settled on Lot 3, Concession 2, Vaughan Township in 1831. Fonds also includes a family tree and history of the Bowes and Maxwell families, with particular emphasis on William Maxwell, son of Anthony and Ellen, and his wife, Ann. Other properties of note are Lot 7, Concession 2, Lot 10, Concession 3 and Lot 11, Concession 3.
