Custodial history

Carr Mills located in Carrville, Vaughan Township, Ontario, Lots 16 and 17, Concession 2; sawmill and grist-mill had been erected on the site by Michael Fisher commencing in 1820; property, including mills, purchased in 1833 by brothers Thomas and William Cook upon their arrival at this time from England. William Cook became a lawyer in Toronto, while Thos. acted as proprietor of Carr Mills. In 1838, he built a new sawmill to take place of its predecessor, which had deteriorated irretrievably; new sawmill located on lot 16, Concession 2, 75 rods from the grist-mill, and together these enterprises are assumed to have constituted Carr Mills. The grist-mill remained in operation, under various ownership, until 16 Nov. 1933, when it was destroyed by fire. Also of note is the fact that in 1844 Thos. Cook constructed a small store on Lot 17, Concession 2 which served also in the capacity of post office for the hamlet of Carrville for over 70 years.
