Item consists of an unpublished thesis. The work elucidates early history of Vaughan Township from intial European settlement in the wake of the American Revolution to 1840; as such predates advent of local government, which was implemented in 1850; provides analysis of topography, transportation, settlement patterns, economic development, the general pioneer social experience and their interconnection; also comments on impact of War of 1812 and 1837 Rebellion on Vaughan Township.

Item consists of a map. Map delineating road beats in Vaughan Township, ca. 1879. Road beats were divisions of the Township delineated for the purpose of facilitating the administration and actual execution of road maintenance in compliance with local statutes of labour. The latter were in place in lieu of municipal taxation for the purposes of road maintenance, and involved obligations on the part of property owners to undertake road work, with the time requirements being directly proportional to the assessed value of a given property. The data utilised in the compilation of the map was gleaned from the Vaughan Township statute of labour returns.

Item consists of a report for the year 1897 submitted to the Reeve and Council of the Township of York and detailing work done on roads in the areas of Coleman, Todmorden, Deer Park, Bracondale, Swansea, Lambton Mills, Mount Dennis, Weston, Downsview, and Yonge St. Report provides excellent example of the role and responsibilities of public works and Township engineers during the late 1800s and details the condition of the roads, street railways, and sidewalks at that time as well as the roles of the Pathmasters and Traction Engineers. List of taxes for 1897 is recorded at end of report.
