Woodbridge fonds

Fonds consists of evidence of the organization, functions, and activities of the municipality's constituent bodies, elected and appointed. Specific areas of jurisdiction and activity delineated include: local ordinances, elections, county and provincial relations, finance and accounting, legal matters, judicial affairs, police and fire protection, municipal planning, public works, hydro-electric service, education(S.S. #14), libraries, licencing, public health and welfare, statistical gathering, records custodianship, recreation, and housing.

Item consists of a watercolour. Image depicts Woodbridge Agricultural and Machine Works, western elevation; includes images of workmen standing in fornt of the factory, thus providing a sense of scale; evidence suggests that the plant opened in 1849, and for the next 36 years played a significant role in the growth and prosperity of the village; by 1874, the factory employed 200 men. In 1880 and 1881 Abell's Triumph Tractor Steam Engine was awarded the Gold Medal in tests at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition, and it received awards of distinction at the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London, England. Abell relocated his plant to Toronto in 1885 as a direct consequence of the Toronto, Grey, and Bruce Railway's refusal to construct a switch line from the main line to his factory.

This edition includes numerous articles re: the history of Woodbridge; specifically, articles comment upon the architectural history of Woodbridge, demographic development, the Woodbridge Library and Post Office, Hurricane Hazel, prominent community members such as Rowland Burr, Dr. Garnet McClean, and John Abell, etc. Includes numerous halftones depicting various subject matter, including rare images of the Abell Agricultural Works.

The catalogue cover provides graphic representation of the Woodbridge Agricultural and Machine Works at time of publication, with contents describing in detail attributes of a variety of agricultural machines and equipment produced by the factory; includes listing of awards and citations conferred at various agricultural machinery competitions.

Fonds consists of family histories and genealogical material, histories of schools and churches in Pine Grove and Woodbridge as well as the communities themselves, photographs, photo albums, scrapbooks, architectural drawings of the St. Margaret Mary School, diplomas, report cards, invitations, certificates, awards, programs, maps, correspondence, newspaper ad layouts, newspaper clippings, and commemorative coins from the 1991 inauguration of the City of Vaughan. Also includes County of York uniform promotion examination certificate documenting promotion of Mary O'Rourke of the Pine Grove School and an indenture between Alfred and Harriet Gooderham, grantors, and Michael O'Rourke, grantee. Also contains "1833 it was -- a trading post and granary 1989 it is -- a house of the 20th century", an unpublished essay by Norberta O'Rourke which details the history of the Elliot Trading Post and surrounding area, originally constructed on Lot 11, Concession 8, Vaughan Township in 1833.

Collection consists of photocopies of land deeds, indentures, descriptions of lands, correspondence, and declarations. Concerns lands in seventh concession, lots seven and eight in Woodbridge near the Wallace Bros., John Abell, and Farr family's lands/buildings. Contains plans and surveys (showing land owners' names) for said area for 1914, 1923, 1944 and 1951. Collection shows the progression of sale of lands through the years.

Woodbridge Fair Collection

Collection consists of three scrapbooks, focusing on the Woobdridge Agricultural Fair, that were compiled between 1847-1985. The scrapbooks contain personal accounts and stories regarding the Fair, its Directors and various commemorative events, as well as photographs, brochures, prize books and ribbons that were produced by the Fair and the Wooodrbridge Agricultural Society ca. 1847-1985. In addition to the three volumes of scrapbooks received, two-hundred and twenty (220) slides were also included in the accession and have been preliminarily indexed based on the writing included on each of the slides outer cardboard frame.
