Woodbridge Fair Collection

Collection consists of three scrapbooks, focusing on the Woobdridge Agricultural Fair, that were compiled between 1847-1985. The scrapbooks contain personal accounts and stories regarding the Fair, its Directors and various commemorative events, as well as photographs, brochures, prize books and ribbons that were produced by the Fair and the Wooodrbridge Agricultural Society ca. 1847-1985. In addition to the three volumes of scrapbooks received, two-hundred and twenty (220) slides were also included in the accession and have been preliminarily indexed based on the writing included on each of the slides outer cardboard frame.

Woodbridge Civic Centre Ontario and Union Jack Flags

File consists of two (2) linen flags, a Union Jack and an Ontario flag, which once flew outside of the Woodbridge Civic Centre. These flags were given to Grace Thompson from Clerk W. H. Young for "safe keeping" in 1971, following the amalgamation of the Township of Vaughan and the Village of Woodbridge.

Fonds consists of correspondence, administrative files, by-laws, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, financial documents, membership lists, fair program and prize lists, legal documents, advertising and promotional material, videocassettes, photoprints, postcards, posters, and ephemera. Most records generated as a result of administration of the Woodbridge Fair with subject matter including Miss Woodbridge Pageant, space requests, general activities, exhibits, Woodbridge Fair Parade, Woodbridge Centennial, livestock judging, etc. M999.9 accession constituted of the Woodbridge Fall Fair papers such as programs, posters, applications for permits, newspaper clippings, correspondence and photographs. The remnants of a tin time capsule from 1924 that was opened in 1997 are also included along with the contents of the time capsule including: 1921-1924 Woodbridge Fair prize lists and letters written by Daniel C. Item consists of a catalogue. The catalogue cover provides graphic representation of the Woodbridge Agricultural and Machine Works at time of publication, with contents describing in detail attributes of a variety of agricultural machines and equipment produced by the factory; includes listing of awards and citations conferred at various agricultural machinery competitions.

Fonds consists of textual material, including funeral notices, 1899-1970; Woodbridge Council minutes (printed), 1925, 1930; Woodbridge voters lists, 1954, 1963, 1968; Town of Vaughan voters lists, 1974, 1979; Vaughan Township and Woodbridge telephone directories, 1946; notebooks listing Woodbridge reeves, councillors, auditors, and hydro commissioners for period 1882-1906; Woodbridge Citizen's Band, cash book, 1917-32; autograph book, 1896-1906; newspapers, 1913-1983; financial documents, predominantly Alvin Wood's tax receipts; text books, promotional exams and test answer sheets for various disciplines belonging to Mr. Wood. Item consists of an essay written as part of work required for credit for Masters History course 5560.06; explores the kinds and nature of work performed by women within their households, and in the course thereof provides evidence that does much to refute traditional notions vis-a-vis women's roles in the nineteenth-century North American workplace specifically, and society generally. Work focuses on Annie Haslem, a butcher in Woodbridge, and is based entirely upon documentary evidence housed at the City of Vaughan Archives; the Woodbridge fonds is the primary source consulted.

Item consists of one (1) soft cover book entitled "Willowdale - Yesterday's Farms, Today's Legacy" written by Scott Kennedy. This book captures the history of Willowdale from the earliest acquisition of land to today's urban environment, and provides intriguing stories about the area and families that once settled in North York. The book contains 192 pages, including numerous black and white photos.

William J. Farrand fonds [Graphic material]

Fonds consists of photographs, including examples of the three earliest photographic processes: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes. All of the above are formal studio portraits depicting individuals who are presumably members of the Farrand family, [ca. 1855-1865]; a number of the albumen photoprints within the fonds are also formal posed studio portraits, and appear in cartes-de-visite and cabinet card formats. In addition to the Farrand and Snider families, postcards depicting various Woodbridge scenes such as streetscapes, the Pine Ave. Bridge, the Snider House and a barn raising on the same property, the Woodbridge C.P.R. Depot, Woodbridge School, etc. [ca. 1885-1910] are present. Accompanying the fonds is a small grouping of textual material: correspondence between C.J.S Farrand and Mary Wood, 1963-64; a souvenir prize list and program for the 100th Anniversary Woodbridge Fair, 1947; also a small number of three dimensional artifacts accompany the fonds: 2 ribbons from the Woodbridge Fair, "Guest", 1935 and "Hon. Director", 1910, and an imitation pewter atomizer enscriberd "Zoe E. Snider".
