  • CA CoV Archives M999.2
  • Item
  • 1961

Item consists of a thesis. Thesis details the political life of Nathaniel Clarke Wallace of Woodbridge, Vaughan Township politician (Deputy Reeve 1874-1877) and Member of Parliament from 1878 to 1901. Born in Burwick (Woodbridge), Ontario in 1844 and employed in the village as a teacher and merchant, Wallace entered national politics and emerges in this work as an exemplar of the influence of Ontario Protestantism on mid to late-19th century Canadian national politics. Wallace's ties to the Orange Order were strong: he was Grand Treasurer of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Ontario West from 1877 to 1883, Deputy Grand Master of British America 1883 to 1887, and Grand Master in 1887. His political experience provides insight into the nature and character of the Canadian national political scene of the era.
