Custodial history
Donald Mackenzie (1852-1945) operated a butcher shop and general store in Woodbridge, Ontario, at least part of the time in a partnership, Mackenzie & Rogerson. Donald was also a liquor license inspector and he sat on the village council (1884-1892). Donald Mackenzie was married to Lydia Ann Addison (1855-1939) and together they had five children: Anne (1877-1969), William (1879-1880), Florence (1883-1968), Addison Alexander (1885-1970), and Donald Ross (1887-1918). Florence married Thomas Currey. Anne married William Dalziel whose family owned the Dalziel Barn. Donald Ross was killed in action March 30, 1918. Addison Alexander (Lex) originally pursued a military career, joining the Governor General's Body Guard in 1904 (name changed to Governor General's Horse Guards in 1936) and was transferred to France as part of the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross for valour at "Regina Trench" at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and was severely wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. After the war, Mackenzie returned to the family farm to take up farming. He entered municipal politics, serving as Councillor for the Village of Woodbridge from 1922 to 1926 and as Reeve (ie. Mayor) of the Village and a member of the York County Council from 1927 to 1935. He then went on to serve in provincial politics as Progressive Conservative MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) for York North from 1945 to 1967, when he retired from public life.
