Laura Weaver collection

Collection consists of photographs of students and staff of Langstaff School, 1893 and Concord School, 1924, n.d.; photographs of attendees of Thornhill United Church Sunday School picnic, 1925, Thornhill Girls Hockey Team, 1918, and unidentified family portrait originally owned by the late Mary Jane Weaver. Textual records consist of newspaper clippings documenting aspects of the heritage of Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill from the 1970's to 1985, with a particular focus on built heritage.

Fonds consists of evidence of the organization, functions, and activities of the municipality's constituent bodies, elected and appointed. Specific areas of jurisdiction and activity delineated include: local ordinances, elections, county and provincial relations, finance and accounting, legal matters, judicial affairs, police and fire protection, municipal planning, public works, hydro-electric service, education(S.S. #14), libraries, licencing, public health and welfare, statistical gathering, records custodianship, recreation, and housing.

Collection consists of copies of transcriptions of abstract indexes to deeds, nominal and agricultural census records re: John McDonald and other members of the McDonald family in Vaughan Township; also includes copy of Crown Deed granting John McDonald land in Vaughan, will and biographical sketch of foregoing; and data on McDonald family farms in Maple and Vellore. Histories of the hamlet of Vellore, the Vellore Old Boys Association, the Vellore School and Township Hall also form part of this collection. Graphic material includes photograpic copyprints of original visual documentation of Vellore, the Cameron Road Carts company, John McDonald and family: Samuel, Dugald, Donald, etc. Images provide good coverage of Vellore during the late 1800's to mid-1930's; also two images of Vellore Football Team, 1908 and 1928.

Fonds consists of photographs. Fragmentary fonds depicting members of the Vaughan Off-hand Rifle Club in 1891; Wahwaskesh Hunt Club, 1903; staff, students, and members of the Board of Trustees of the Maple School pictured in front of the school building, [ca. 1897]; and Maple Softball Team (women's), [ca. 1928].

Keffer and Shunk family sous-fonds

Sous-fonds consists of textual material including a Lutheran prayer book dated 1784, minute books of the Sherwood Grange, 1875-1887, marriage records, receipts, daybook, and documentation of educational experience. Also present is an aggregate of graphic material constituted primarily of photographs of family members, the majority of which are card format or matt mounted albumen photographs, and snap shots, [ca. 1865]-1968. Architecture and farm equipment are also represented; as well as a fine portarit of the Vellore Football Team, champions of 1936. The inclusive dates of graphic materials are [ca. 1865]-1968 ; (predominant [ca. 1865]-1936).

Accession M017.7 consists of one (1) antique cedar steamer trunk with key, ca. 1850s, which housed all items received in this donation. Items housed within the trunk included: 2cm of textual records consisting of family documents, letters, receipts, and deeds of sale; fourteen (14) books; three (3) bibles; three (3) black and white photos; one (1) pencil crayon drawing entitled "Lonesome Pine" and one (1) West York Vaughan Agricultural Judges Ribbon, from 1861.

Accession M020.7 consists primarily of items relating to the land dispute between William Shunk and Downey over part of Lot 13, Concession 4. Other items from William Shunk and the Keffer family are also included.

Vellore Women's Institute fonds [Textual record and other material]

Fonds consists of minute books, 1915-1982, delineating deliberations, decisions, and activities of the Vellore Women's Institute, as well as occasionally citing the names of members and officers; and Vellore Tweedsmuir history (present in original and microform). Main topical subjects addressed in the latter include: Vellore Women's Institute and its contribution to welfare and development of the community; general community history including geography and topography of the locale; municipal government; agriculture; architecture; education; trade and commerce; histories of individual farms and families; religion; experiences of the community in Canada's wars including namers of volunteers in both conflicts; the Vellore Literary Society; the Vellore Band; transcribed reminicences of such individuals as Mrs. Ann Davidson, and Elizabeth Ann Snider; (extensive coverage of Rutherford Barn Raising, 1929; as well as history of hamlet of Teston; and Purpleville School (S.S #11).

Collection consists of images copied by SPOHT to act as reference tools for the organization in the execution of its functions and attendant activities. Index card-mounted images were classified by subject and fully described by the collection compiler, with subject cross references provided. Subjects devised by SPOHT include artists, children, churches, cemeteries, clubs and groups, families, farms, festivals, hotels and taverns, houses, old swimming hole, people, radial cars, recreation areas, schools, sports, stores, streetscapes, transportation,village doctor, village undertaker, women's group's, Yonge Street families.
