Item consists of a hand-book. Hand-book delineates the composition of various municipal units (villages, etc.), municipal councils, including the latter's qualifications, disqualifications, and exemptions, as well as the duties associated with various municipal positions such as clerk, treasurer, assessor, auditor, etc. Also comments upon powers of municipal councils, procedures governing meetings of the latter, elections, etc.

Specific areas of jurisdiction and activity delineated include: local ordinances, elections, county and provincial relations, finance and accounting, legal matters, judicial affairs, police and fire protection, municipal planning, public works, hydro-electric service, education(S.S. #14), libraries, licencing, public health and welfare, statistical gathering, records custodianship, recreation, and housing.

Also of note: 6 original letters of Vaughan's earliest settlers describing life in the area, 1843-1860.

Map of Vaughan Township indicating freeholders and householders for each lot with assessed value of real property for which the foregoing were rated; relative location of property owners not shown. Map indicates the exact vote cast by each eiligible voter in the Township, and thus provides a cumulative portrait of the political leanings of the township during the time under examination. Data derived from Vaughan Township election returns and collectors' rolls for 1857.

Fonds consists of plans, reports, studies, correspondence, published materials, essays, and newspaper clippings which document the planning and development of Vaughan. Specific Vaughan topics within the fonds include the Maple dump, the Maple theme park, the Woodbridge annexation, and the building of the Vaughan industrial park, to name but a few. Moreover, official plans and studies for Thornhill, Maple, Kleinburg, Nashville, and Woodbridge provide invaluable evidence as to the evolutionary development of these communities.

Major Lex Mackenzie collection

Collection consists predominantly of newspaper clippings recounting Mackenzie's various achievements in public life. Also includes campaign literature and printed matter related to one of Mackenzie's Provincial PC election bids; leaflet for an event honouring Mackenzie in 1966, which provides considerable biographical data; a programme for the 1974 opening of the Mackenzie House, originally located on the south-east corner of Highway #7 and Islington Avenue in Woodbridge, and relocated by the MTRCA to Black Creek Pioneer Village in 1973, does the same; it also provides information about the Mackenzie family generally.

Thornhill Women's Institute Fonds
