Town of Vaughan Planning Committee fonds

Fonds consists of minutes of Vaughan Township Planning Board, 1948-1970, and those of the Town of Vaughan Planning Committee, 1971-1982; and official plan amendments, 1960-1977, which in addition to the amendments per se include reference and background material, such as reports, by-laws, etc., and supporting Cartographic records; the noted amendments are the official registered copies originally lodged with the Office of the Registrar General of Ontario, under the Planning Act until amended in 1983, when the Registrar General relinquished this function and the documents were returned to the municipality. Fonds provides excellent evidence of the course and shape of development in Vaughan during the period specified. The following registered official plan amendments are missing: 1-3, 10, 12, 15, 25, 27, 34, 42, 48, 73, 75, 78, 80-81, 89; a complete set of duplicates of registerd official plan amendments is present to fill informational gaps.

Town of Vaughan Treasurer's fonds

Fonds consists of records from the Treasurer's Dept. that are transferred to the Archives on a continuing basis. At time of cataloguing fonds consists of three series: one is composed of financial and legal documents, 1973-1976 relating to the Gallanough Bequest, the moneys therefrom being used for construction of Gallanough Library in Thornhill; second series is microfiche of periodical Municipal World, 1891-1991; the third accrual is composed of collector's rolls, which are an official valuation by household, owner or tenant of real property or assets for the purpose of municipal taxation, with related statistics, such as lot size, and a record of payments from property oweners for taxes due, 1972-1986.

Item consists of a ledger, or volume of final entry in accounting recording credits, debits, and all other monetary transactions under individual accounts, here delineated under the names of individual account holders. The ledger contains accounts from both the sawmill and grist-mill.

Item consists of attendance registers. In addition to listing attendees, register delineates provincial instructions to local trustees, teachers, and school inspectors vis-a-vis attendance, as well as indicating the moral climate of the day as it existed in the education system as seen through the inclusion of specific directives in the matter of religious and moral instruction.

James and William Russell fonds

Fonds consists primarily of textual records offering comprehensive coverage of the business dealings of the Russells: correspondence, legal documents including estate records, indentures, agreements, leases, wills, etc., financial records, fragments of flock and herd registers, and printed matter. Some of the aforementioned textual material relates to Wm. Russell Sr.; of particular value here are real property tax assessment certificates, which comment on various aspects of the life of the elder Russell. The fonds also includes 2 postcards, one unidentified and one of the Richmond Hill Methodist Church; and two photographs depicting, presumably, the Russells, [ca. 1880]. Also present are 3 architectural renderings, floor plans, elevations, mouldings and casements, of an unidentified residential structure, [ca. 1880]. A variety of richly-ornamented diplomas, certificates, and ribbons and Stevensgraphs reflecting victories by James and William Russell cattle at contests sponsored by the West Riding of York and Township of Vaughan Agricultural Societies, the Woodbridge Agricultural Society, the Toronto Industrial Exhibition, the Dominion of Canada Industrial Exhibition, and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, covering the period 1874-1900 provide ample and colourful evidence of the skill of the Russell brothers in their particular sub-field of agricultural science.

Item consists of an essay traces the experience of the Dalziel famaily in Vaughan from its arrival in the early 19th-century to 1993; it includes a number of copies of original family documents (indentures, agreements, etc.) and relevant newspaper articles; much insight is provided into the nature and form of pioneer life in Vaughan Township, and early architecture in the area and contemporary efforts in the preservation thereof.

Photograph depicts Keele Street looking north; intersection with Richmond Street appears between the second and third structures visible in right-central portion of image; clearly represented in right-central portion of image is the Standard Bank of Canada, built in 1908 by James B. McClean; by the mid-1930's the building was occupied jointly by the Bank of Commerce and the Vaughan Township municipal offices.
